No deployment to Pakistan
EuropAid announced on December 20 that there will be no deployment of short term observers for the elections in Pakistan on January 8, 2008. This affects me as I was proposed as an STO by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights, which deals with elections obervations in countries that are not members of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, anounced to-day that there the EU Elections Observation Mission Pakistan will not deploy short term observers for the presidential elections in Pakistan on January 8, 2008. There will, however, be deployed 60 long-term observers. The notice about this was published by the EuropeAid Co-operation Office on December 20, 2007. This decision was made further to a Security Assessment Mission, which re-assessed the security situation and made various recommendations to the Commissioner
, the message stated. In other words, as I gather, it is too dangerous for foreigners to stay in the polling stations around the elections.
This affects me, because my country, to my surprise, had appointed me as an STO. Well, I guess I'll try out some other activities for January 2008. Somehow, the Danish police catches less East European pick-pockets these weeks, so there is less to interpret.
